Colour Styles

Get the syrup back to the colour it is in the cup

100+ curated styles built for the way frozen desserts actually have to perform on a small screen. Direct midday sun is the single hardest light you could hand a phone: it clips the white ice to featureless paper, the camera pulls exposure down to save the highlight, and your syrups land two stops darker and completely desaturated. That is why a cherry red that looks fluorescent in your hand posts as a dull brick, why blue raspberry photographs grey-lavender, and why the crisp bands you poured collapse into one muddy smear. FoodShot recovers the clipped highlight first, then re-lights: low raking light that passes through the ice so the syrup glows from inside rather than sitting on top, cool open shadow that keeps the untouched crystals reading as snow instead of grey, and bright even sweeps that hold eight different flavours at the same saturation across one line-up. Everything stays at the bright, playful, family-priced tier this trade actually sells in — no artisan sorbet, no fine-dining plating. If you scoop rather than shave, our ice cream shops page is the one written for you.

Builder Mode

Surface plus backdrop plus cup equals a flavour board

Pick a surface — clean white sweep, pale wood, dark slate, wet steel counter. Choose a backdrop — bright open daylight, deep shadow falloff, soft outdoor blur. Upload your photo. Builder Mode composites all three into one coherent scene, so the bin bag, the generator lead, the folding chair, the neighbouring pitch and the car park behind you never make it into the picture. That matters more on a stand than almost anywhere, because you have no room and no wall — you are shooting on a two-foot ledge with whatever the field behind you happens to look like that day. It is also how you build a flavour board that reads as one menu. Forty syrups is forty photos taken across a whole season, in different weather, at different pitches, and shot raw they look like forty unrelated snapshots. Run every one through the same build and they sit on the same surface, at the same scale, under the same light, so a customer scrolling your board sees a range rather than a camera roll. When you tow rather than pitch, the same approach for the vehicle itself is covered on our food trucks page.

My Styles

One look, locked, so every flavour matches the last

Upload the photo you are happiest with — usually the one cup that happened to catch soft light in the half hour before the sun came round — and set it as your style reference. Everything you shoot afterwards is matched to it: same surface tone, same light direction, same contrast, same background. For a snow cone business this is the highest-leverage setting on the page, because your feed is your flavour wall and a flavour wall where every cup is lit differently does not read as a menu at all — it reads as forty guesses. Lock the reference once and the whole board starts to hold together, which is what makes somebody scroll it instead of bouncing off the third photo. It also survives the season. When you add a limited holiday palette in July or a chamoy line in September, the new flavours land inside the look you already built rather than starting a second identity beside it. Operators who also work stadium and arena pitches should read our concessions and venues page, which covers the same locked-reference approach at volume.

Perfect For

Every kind of stand selling ice by the cup

From a park pitch that opens the first warm weekend to a trailer working three fairs a month and taking private bookings through the winter, the problem is identical: brutal outdoor light, a queue that will not wait, and a product that has ninety seconds before it stops looking like the photo.

🍧

Park & Beach Stands

You are pitched in full sun with no shade and no wall, and every shot comes back with the ice clipped to white paper. Pull one cup at the window, shoot it fast, and get back a photo where the syrup actually glows through the crystals — the version people saw in your hand, not the one the phone recorded.

🚚

Shave Ice Trailers

A dessert truck lives or dies on the photo that decides whether someone crosses a field to reach you. The trailer window, the counter line-up and the flavour board all have to sell from a thumbnail. Shoot them between rushes and restyle them into one consistent set you can reuse at every pitch you work.

🎪

Festival & Fair Carts

You work a different site every weekend and the background changes each time — one pitch backs onto a fence, the next onto a generator. Rebuild the surface and backdrop and the cups look like they came from the same stand every week, which is what makes people recognise you at the next fair.

🎉

Private Party Bookings

Bookings are where the real margin is, and they are won from a gallery, not a queue. Parents scrolling for a birthday want to see the spread, the colours and the setup before they enquire. A clean event set does more for your enquiry rate than another weekend of walk-ups ever will.

🏫

School & Sports Fundraisers

Fundraiser committees book from whatever you can send them in a message thread that evening. Photos of trays ready to serve, in true colour, on a consistent background, read as an operator who has done this before — which is exactly the reassurance somebody needs before handing you a school field.

❄️

New & Off-Season Operators

You are writing a shaved ice business plan, or you are three weeks in with a shaver, forty syrups and nothing that looks like a brand. Lock one style on your first ten cups and the feed reads as an established stand long before your weekends do — which matters when you are pitching for next season's sites now.

No. FoodShot never sends a photographer, never runs an on-site or studio shoot, never turns up at your pitch and never invents a cup you did not make. It restyles photos you take yourself. You build the cup exactly as a customer would receive it — same ice, same syrups, same toppings, same cup — take a phone photo at your own window, upload it, and FoodShot re-lights and re-stages that exact image. The same three bands, the same snow cap, the same gummies in the same places. Nothing is fabricated from nothing, which matters on a stand because the person who orders from the photo is standing in front of you ninety seconds later holding the real thing. What changes is the light, the surface underneath and the clutter behind it. The cup itself is yours.

That is the specific failure this exists to fix. Shaved ice is the hardest subject in food photography for a phone: it is a bright white, highly reflective, semi-translucent surface, usually sitting in direct sun. The camera sees the white, protects it by dropping exposure, and everything else — the syrup, the cup, the toppings — goes down with it. Or it exposes for the syrup and the ice clips to a flat white blob with no crystal detail at all. Restyling rebuilds the lighting so the key comes across the dome at a low angle rather than straight down onto it, which means the granular crystal texture throws its own micro-shadows and reads as snow instead of paper, while the syrup is lit from behind and through so it glows rather than sitting on the surface as a dark stain. Shoot with the cup slightly shaded if you can, keep the phone steady, and the texture you can see with your own eyes is the texture that comes back.

Yes, and colour is the complaint we hear most from this trade, because in your business the colour genuinely is the menu. Outdoor light works against you twice over. Midday sun is harsh enough that phones desaturate to protect the highlight, so cherry reds go brick and blue raspberry drifts grey-lavender. Then late-afternoon light goes strongly warm and orange, which lifts your reds and yellows but drags every green, aqua and blue toward muddy. A canopy makes it worse again by bouncing its own colour down onto the ice. FoodShot corrects the cast before it restyles, then lights the cup with a neutral source so the syrup that comes out of the pump is the syrup that lands on the feed. It is worth shooting the same flavour once at eleven and once at four and comparing them, because it will tell you which hour of your own trading day is actually usable.

You shoot it badly and fast, and let the restyle do the rest — that is the entire point. You do not need a good photo, a tripod, a reflector or a gap in the queue. You need a sharp, correctly framed one taken within a few seconds of the pour, before the dome slumps and the bands bleed. In practice the routine that works is to build one extra cup during a lull, set it on the same patch of ledge you always use, take three quick shots from roughly the same height, and get back to the window. The whole thing costs you under twenty seconds. Because the restyle rebuilds the surface, the background and the light, it does not matter that you shot it on a wet steel counter with a car park behind you. What it cannot rescue is a soft or badly cropped frame, so the one thing worth doing carefully is holding still and getting the whole dome in shot.

That is where most operators get the clearest return, because private bookings, fairs and school fundraisers are what carry a seasonal business through the months the stand is shut. Enquiries for those come from a gallery rather than a queue — somebody planning a birthday or a summer fete is scrolling on a phone in the evening, comparing you against two other operators, and deciding on the strength of the photos alone. A consistent set showing the trays ready to serve, the flavour range in true colour and the stand setup at an event does more work than any amount of copy. Shoot an event set once at a booking you are already working, restyle the whole batch to one look, and reuse it across your booking page, your enquiry replies and your listings for the rest of the season.

Every image comes back at 2048x2048 and is optimised on delivery, which is comfortably enough for a feed post, a story, a booking page, an enquiry reply, a listing photo or a small printed card. FoodShot supplies the image file only — it does not print, ship or produce any physical menu boards, banners, signage, packaging or flyers for you, and it does not design your logo. If you are taking an image to a large printed banner or a full-height stand wrap, check the minimum resolution with whoever prints it before you commit, because a banner viewed from two feet away in a queue can want more pixels than a screen ever will. For everything you post, send or show somebody on a phone, what you get back is more than enough.

Your next season deserves better photos.
